Prof Martin Birchall, consultant in Otorhinolaryngology & Head & Neck Surgery at The Wellington Hospital, outlines the advances in the treatment of throat problems.

The treatment of patients with laryngeal cancer has also moved on. In the field of radiotherapy, there is something called Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy or IMRT which is available in very few centres in the UK but here in London we have two centres that use it. This means you can focus on just where the tumour is, without getting all the side-effects of sunburn and possible damage to eyes, spinal cord that conventional radiotherapy has and is very much better for patients.
