Private London hospitals with intensive care facilities
One in every nine beds in our London hospitals is designated for critical care. This is the highest proportion in the private sector in the UK includes six special care baby beds at The Portland Hospital and a 12-bed intensive care unit for babies and children at The Harley Street Clinic.
The reason we have so many intensive care beds is because we care for many patients with serious illnesses such as cancer, brain and spine injuries and heart conditions and undertake complex surgical procedures. Our policy is that a patient should not need to be transferred to another hospital - however sick they are.
Patient survival rates in our intensive care units are close to five times higher than the expected rates. This is based on an external audit of intensive care across the UK called the ICNARC study.
Our intensive care units are staffed by a team of doctors and nurses who specialise in intensive care and are supervised by specialist consultants called intensivists.
The team operates 24/7, with resident doctors and nurses supported by constant on-call clinical and medical support teams such as radiologists and physiotherapists.
